The government of Mauritius has reconstituted the board of the State Trading Corporation (STC) with Jyh Guang, also known as Gilbert Shu, as the part-time chairman. This decision was made during a Cabinet meeting on October 2, 2026. The reconstitution aims to give new impetus to STC's activities and accelerate the implementation of measures announced by the government to address the rising cost of living.

The new board includes Parsooramen Chellun, also known as Jayen Chellun, the secretary-general of the Association des Consommateurs de l'île Maurice, as the representative of consumer interests. Veereindre Mussai has been appointed as an independent member. Other members of the board include Salim Mohammad Ally Oozeer, Vasheel Seedoyal, Vijay Kumar Mudhoo, Nawsheen Sairally, and Shreeganesh Ganga, representing various ministries and the Mauritius Ports Authority.

The reconstitution of the STC board follows the revocation of the previous board, which was announced by Minister of Commerce Michael Sik Yuen on September 30, 2026. The minister cited delays in implementing directives to import more products to combat the high cost of living as a reason for the decision. The previous board was chaired by economist Takesh Luckho.

According to Minister Sik Yuen, the decision to reconstitute the board was made after consulting with the independent members of the previous board. He met with them personally on Tuesday, September 29, to inform them of his decision and exchange views in a spirit of courtesy, transparency, and responsibility.

The new board's composition was presented to the Cabinet on October 2, 2026, as reported by Defimedia.info on October 1. The minister emphasized that the reconstitution aims to accelerate the implementation of measures to address the rising cost of living in Mauritius.

The STC plays a crucial role in importing essential goods to Mauritius, and the government's efforts to revamp the board are seen as a move to improve the country's food security and combat inflation. The new board will be responsible for implementing the government's directives to increase the importation of products and stabilize prices.

The reconstitution of the STC board is part of the government's efforts to address the economic challenges facing Mauritius. The new leadership, under Gilbert Shu's chairmanship, will be tasked with driving the corporation's activities and implementing the government's measures to support the economy and consumers.
