The Private Secondary Education Authority (PSEA) of Mauritius celebrated its golden jubilee on September 21 in Beau-Bassin. He discussed the Foundation Programme and the need to reduce class sizes to ensure that each student receives adequate support. The minister also addressed the issue of schools with low student enrollment, stating that a minimum of 150 to 175 students is required for a school to be viable.
Deenesh Patpur, Chairman of the PSEA Board of Directors, acknowledged the challenges faced by some private colleges, including low enrollment numbers. He assured that the PSEA is committed to supporting these institutions and exploring innovative solutions, such as recruiting retired educators to address staffing needs.
The jubilee celebration included testimonials from former educators and principals, who shared their experiences and insights on the evolution of private secondary education in Mauritius. Gilberte Chung Kim Chung, Executive Director of the Service diocésain de l'éducation catholique (SeDEC), and Anjanee Bhowan, former principal of the Universal College, were among those who shared their stories.
The ceremony also featured the launch of a commemorative pin and e-magazine, the unveiling of a memorial plaque, and the presentation of decorations. Additionally, a tree-planting ceremony and an art gallery were part of the celebrations. Cultural performances by students and staff from various institutions added to the event's festive atmosphere.
As the PSEA looks to the future, it aims to continue providing quality education to students while addressing the changing needs of the sector.
