The Mauritius National Formulary, the country's first, is nearing its final version. This reference guide aims to standardize the information used by doctors, pharmacists, and nurses, ensuring the safe, rational, and effective use of medications. A validation workshop was held on September 30 in Quatre-Bornes, bringing together the Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization, the JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, and sector professionals.

The formulary will provide a common base of information for prescription, dispensing, and treatment monitoring. It will include essential details such as indications, contraindications, interactions, dosages, safety alerts, and update rules. The Ministry of Health currently manages a database of nearly 8,000 pharmaceutical products. However, the formulary is not just a commercial list of registered medications; its value lies in the quality of the information provided.

The project is expected to consist of three volumes and will be published online and in print after validation. The professor Praveen Mohadeb suggested that the formulary be revised at least every two years and evolve into digital tools, potentially supported by artificial intelligence. However, the use of artificial intelligence will only be beneficial if the starting data is validated, updates are traceable, and responses do not substitute clinical judgment.

The publication of the formulary can enhance coherence between hospitals, health centers, and pharmacies. Nevertheless, it will not alone resolve issues such as stock shortages, supply delays, or discrepancies between registered and available medications. The public will need to monitor four key elements: publication date, the authority responsible for updates, professional access, and a clear correction mechanism.

The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with international partners, has been working on this project to improve the quality of healthcare services in Mauritius. The formulary will serve as a reliable source of information for healthcare professionals, enabling them to make informed decisions about medication use.

The introduction of the National Formulary is expected to have a positive impact on the healthcare system in Mauritius. By standardizing medication information, it will help reduce errors and improve patient care. The formulary will also facilitate the sharing of information among healthcare professionals, promoting a more cohesive approach to healthcare.

The final version of the Mauritius National Formulary is anticipated to be published soon. Its implementation will mark a significant milestone in the country's efforts to enhance its healthcare system. Key stakeholders will continue to monitor its effectiveness and make necessary adjustments to ensure it meets the evolving needs of healthcare professionals and patients.
