Me Rashad Daureeawo, a Senior Counsel from Mauritius, recently visited the Islamic World League (Rabita Al-Alam Al-Islami) in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. During his visit, he met with Dr. Abdulrahman bin Abdullah Al-Zaid, Deputy Secretary-General of the League. The meeting provided an opportunity for Daureeawo to reflect on the historical and fraternal relations between the League and the Mauritian Muslim community.
Daureeawo expressed his gratitude for the financial, material, and institutional assistance provided by the Islamic World League to Mauritius over several decades. He acknowledged the significant role played by former directors of the League's Mauritian office, Abdul Wahab Doucoure and Dr. Hashim Mahdi, in fostering cooperation, solidarity, and community development. Under their leadership, the League's office contributed to numerous projects benefiting the Mauritian Muslim community.
The League's support enabled the implementation of various initiatives, including the adoption of the Rabita-al-Alam-al-Islami (Mauritius Branch) Act, the construction of the Rabita House, and financing for the ICC and mosques. Additionally, the League assisted in the renovation and improvement of several places of worship. These efforts also promoted Islamic education, social welfare, and religious development within the community.
During his meeting with Dr. Al-Zaid, Daureeawo emphasized the importance of reestablishing durable institutional relations between the Islamic World League and Mauritius, particularly with the Mauritius Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs. The Deputy Secretary-General expressed his appreciation for Mauritius as a model of peaceful coexistence among different communities.
The discussions highlighted significant potential for cooperation in priority areas such as Islamic education, training, development of religious and community infrastructure, social assistance, institutional capacity building, and promotion of the Arabic language and interfaith dialogue.
Dr. Al-Zaid expressed his desire to revive and revitalize the partnership between the Islamic World League and Mauritius. The renewed cooperation aims to benefit the Mauritian community and strengthen ties between the League and the island nation.
