The "Cancer & Hope Talk" event was organized by La Sentinelle group as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Held at Ocean's Creek hotel in Balaclava, the discussion brought together key stakeholders to share experiences and address patient needs. Areff Salauroo, CEO of La Sentinelle Ltd, emphasized the importance of raising awareness, promoting early screening, and supporting research. He also highlighted the need for equitable access to treatments and continued initiatives for health and well-being.
Salauroo cited the company's social responsibility efforts, including health and safety awareness activities throughout the year. He reiterated the importance of collective efforts to inform and support those affected by cancer. Health Minister Anil Bachoo presented data from the National Cancer Registry, revealing 3,362 new cases and 1,649 deaths in 2024. Breast cancer was the most common among women, while prostate cancer was prevalent among men.
Minister Bachoo discussed measures to strengthen patient care, including the introduction of 16 new cancer medications. These include targeted therapies and immunotherapies. The National Cancer Centre is also expanding its services, with the recruitment of 60 specialized nurses from India and an oncological surgeon to enhance specialized care.
For patients requiring treatments not available locally, the ministry facilitates transfers abroad. In 2025, 130 patients benefited from this program, compared to over 70 between January and October 2026. A program supporting children with cancer, extended to young adults up to 25, enabled 46 patients to receive treatment abroad between March and December 2025, and 90 others between January and October 2026.
The discussion also focused on patient needs throughout their journey, particularly psychological support and nutrition. Experts, including Dr. Nitin Aucharaz, Yovanee Veerapen, and Nousruth Mahadawoo Rohoman, shared insights on these aspects of care. Other participants included Savida Venkatachellum, Dr. Rishta Jeetun, and Anjum Durgahee.
The event underscored the importance of a comprehensive approach to cancer care, encompassing medical treatment, psychological support, and nutrition. By sharing experiences and expertise, stakeholders aimed to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
