The Mauritian government has launched a major upgrade project for Roche-Bois, a neighborhood in Port-Louis, with an estimated budget of Rs 100 million. The project, announced by Housing Minister Shakeel Mohamed, aims to transform the area with new infrastructure, services, and amenities. The minister stated that Roche-Bois has been neglected for too long, despite its strategic location near the port area, where many businesses operate.

The upgrade project includes several key developments, such as a new access road, renovation of the Kaya football field, a synthetic turf, food court, children's play area, amphitheater, jogging track, and green spaces. The minister emphasized the need to catch up on the development of Roche-Bois, which he believes is essential for the well-being of its residents. He also highlighted the importance of involving local stakeholders, including businesses and community groups, in the project's implementation.

Minister Mohamed plans to approach several companies, including Indian Oil, Bhunjun Group, Total, Holcim, Cementis, and Mauritius Commercial Bank, to seek their contribution to the project. He cited examples of international practices where large enterprises fund social and environmental projects in the communities where they operate. The minister also invited companies that benefit from the port's activity, but are not located in Roche-Bois, to participate in the project.

The project goes beyond infrastructure development, with a focus on improving local services, including the Roche-Bois clinic and dispensary. The minister also mentioned the need to relocate squatters living on state-owned land in precarious conditions. He announced that a survey has been conducted to identify the occupants and that a new site has been identified to relocate them.

According to Minister Mohamed, a quantity surveyor from the National Housing Development Company Ltd (NHDC) has estimated the project's cost at Rs 100 million. He aims to formalize partnerships with relevant authorities, including the Port-Louis municipality, Mauritius Ports Authority, and Road Development Authority. A protocol agreement is expected to be signed soon.

Local community groups have welcomed the project, with Lindsay Morvan from the Mouvement pour le Progrès de Roche-Bois stating that it addresses long-standing concerns and can help improve the area's image and residents' daily lives. Adriano Marianen from Group Diboute Ros Bwa also expressed support for the initiative.

The upgrade project is expected to have a significant impact on Roche-Bois and the surrounding region. Minister Mohamed emphasized that the project's success relies on collective mobilization and the generosity of Mauritian companies. He expressed his desire to see the project become a catalyst for transformation in Roche-Bois and the broader port area.
