A 26-year-old man was arrested on September 30 in Terre-Rouge, Mauritius, following an operation by the Criminal Investigation Division. He is suspected of being involved in a series of thefts primarily in Montagne Longue and Terre-Rouge. According to the police, the suspect has been linked to 21 cases reported since the beginning of 2026. The arrest was the result of intelligence work, field research, and surveillance conducted by CID officers.
The suspect, who has a prior record as a "Habitual Criminal" (HC) at the Montagne Longue police station, allegedly confessed to his involvement in several cases during interrogation. He is accused of burglaries, thefts on public roads, and attempted thefts. In Montagne Longue, several homes, businesses, and other premises were reportedly targeted. One of the cases involves the theft of approximately Rs 200,000 in cash from Poppies Snack Industries Co. Ltd.
The suspect is also linked to the theft of jewelry, money, and household items worth around Rs 140,000. Additionally, he is accused of stealing a motorcycle and various items valued at Rs 96,000, as well as construction materials and tools worth around Rs 60,000. Other cases include the theft of electrical and copper cables, vehicle batteries, a Samsung phone, a gas cylinder, agricultural equipment, tools, and a DVR system.
The suspect allegedly snatched an iPhone 17 Pro Max from a woman on a public road in Montagne Longue. In another case, egg trays were stolen but later recovered. He is also accused of attempting to steal electrical cables and a drill. In Terre-Rouge, several theft cases resulting in significant losses are being investigated. These include the theft of food, an electric bicycle, and a DVR system valued at Rs 264,300.
Further investigation revealed that the suspect is linked to the theft of electrical tools and cables worth around Rs 175,000. He is also accused of stealing 15 boxes of chocolate valued at Rs 40,000 and Rs 70,300 in cash. A water pump and accessories worth Rs 4,000 were allegedly stolen as well. A provisional charge has been filed against the suspect in four cases, which will be presented to the Pamplemousses District Court.
The suspect was remanded in police custody, and a search is ongoing to determine the extent of his involvement in each case and to identify any potential accomplices. Additionally, it was found that the suspect is wanted in a case dating back to 2024 and is also being investigated for allegedly violating the conditions of his bail.
During the operation, some of the stolen items were recovered, including a red pouch containing Rs 4,000 linked to the theft of Rs 70,300 and a motorcycle associated with one of the Montagne Longue cases. The CID of Terre-Rouge continues to investigate the suspect's activities to uncover the full extent of his crimes.
