Mauritian triathlete Tiffany Piat has won the gold medal in the youth category at the African Triathlon Championships held in Hurghada, Egypt. She competed in the super sprint event, which consisted of 400m swimming, 11km cycling, and 2.5km running. Piat finished the event with a time of 0:39:32, beating Algerian Saleha Nerddjes Berrached and Moroccan Loujain Ghaicha.

Piat's victory marks a significant achievement for Mauritian triathlon, with the country's last gold medal in the same category won by Matthias Mongelard in 2013. Piat expressed her pride in representing Mauritius and her joy in winning the championship. She also thanked the Mauritius Triathlon Federation (FMTri) for their support, which enabled her to participate in the competition.

According to Alain St-Louis, president of FMTri, Piat had been identified as a promising athlete after her silver medal win at the Africa Triathlon Junior Cup in June. St-Louis attributed Piat's success to her mastery of the event, despite being in fifth place after the swimming segment. Piat made up the deficit during the cycling segment and secured a comfortable lead in the running segment.

Two other Mauritian athletes, Rémi Samouilhan and Keira Rajabalee, also competed in the youth category. Samouilhan finished 14th in the boys' event with a time of 0:40:45, while Rajabalee took fourth place in the girls' event with a time of 0:42:14. The championships also featured the presence of World Triathlon officials, including President Antonio Fernández Arimany and Sport Director Gergely Markus.

The African Triathlon Championships will continue with the standard distance event on Saturday, featuring Adrien Toulet in the U23 category and Rémy Gérard and Laurent L'Entêté in the elite category. The mixed relay event will take place on Sunday, with seven countries participating. St-Louis will decide on the team composition after the results of the standard distance event.

Piat's achievement is a significant milestone for Mauritian triathlon, highlighting the country's potential in the sport. The FMTri aims to provide better support and guidance to young athletes as they transition to the junior category. With this victory, Piat is expected to gain more experience and exposure in international competitions.

The African Triathlon Championships provide a valuable platform for young athletes to gain experience and compete against top-level opponents. Piat's gold medal win demonstrates her potential for growth and development in the sport. As the championships conclude, the focus will shift to preparing for future events and building on the success of Mauritian triathletes.
