Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani has urged the private sector to increase investments in inland cities, particularly in tourism and economic activities, to create jobs for young people and encourage population retention. He made the call during a meeting with stakeholders and leaders of the Wadane district, as part of his working visit to the Adrar region. The President emphasized that the main challenge after providing infrastructure and basic services is to create economic activities and a strong economic fabric.
The President expressed his satisfaction with the warm welcome he received in Wadane, reiterating his gratitude to the people of Adrar and Wadane for their hospitality. He noted that this welcome reflects the authenticity and generosity of the people of Wadane, qualities that "no longer need to be demonstrated". The President also highlighted that this is his second visit to Wadane in less than a year, which he said is a positive sign.
During the meeting, the President reviewed several projects aimed at connecting isolated areas to the national road network, including the connection of Ambik, Lhouach, Amerj, Adelb Krou, Oul Ying, Gabou, Bir Am Akrein, Chinguetti, and Algydia to the national network. He also mentioned that work is underway to connect Mal, Monckl, and Barkeol, while tenders have been launched for the connection of Atouil, Ain Farbah, and Bostileh to the national road network.
In addition, the President announced that studies have been completed or are near completion for the construction of roads connecting Wadane, Oulata, Tichit, Oumbo, and administrative centers to the national road network. He also mentioned that a road has been built to connect Karmesine and the port of Ingako, and that efforts are underway to connect the Afotout coastal area.
The President also addressed the issue of access to water in Wadane, announcing that a specialized study on water exploration is currently underway, which is expected to be completed within three months. He also mentioned that a new drilling program for deep water is being planned, which could be directed to Wadane if the study results show positive indicators of water presence.
The President emphasized his commitment to changing the mentality that makes Nouakchott the primary destination for those seeking treatment, education, or employment, by providing some of the needs of citizens in their original areas. He congratulated the people of Wadane on their commitment to their city and their refusal to migrate, highlighting that their presence in the city is essential to preserving its history and significance.
The meeting was attended by the Governor of Adrar, Abdullah Ould Mohamed Mahmoud, and the official delegation accompanying the President, as well as the President of the Adrar region, the Governor of Wadane district, and local administrative and security authorities. The President's visit aims to assess the situation in Adrar and listen to the concerns and aspirations of citizens.
