Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani recently stressed the importance of education in building a more equitable society and achieving sustainable development. During a meeting with cadres and notables of the Chinguitty moughataa, the President emphasized that education is the essential path to achieving these goals. He called on families, elites, and the entire Mauritanian society to prioritize education as a national priority.
The President highlighted that efforts over the past few years have focused on two main areas: generalizing basic and secondary education, and developing higher education in line with the country's development needs. He noted that progress has been made in primary and secondary education, particularly with the creation of "l'École républicaine," which aims to provide equal access to education for all children.
The President explained that "l'École républicaine" is based on three key components: establishing educational infrastructure, recruiting teaching staff, and reforming school curricula. He emphasized that these components are essential to the success of the project and achieving its objectives. The President also noted that efforts have been made to improve higher education, with ten new institutions opened since 2019.
These new institutions include the University of Nouadhibou, the Higher Institute of Statistics, and the Higher Institute of Energy, among others. The President stated that the expansion of higher education aims to develop the education and scientific research system, provide new opportunities for young people, and adapt university training to development needs and labor market requirements.
The President also mentioned that work is underway to establish new higher education institutions in several cities, including Kaédi, Néma, Tidjikja, and Kiffa. These institutions aim to extend the higher education network beyond the capital and strengthen specialized training opportunities in different regions of the country.
In the field of scientific research, the President noted that nine doctoral schools have been opened for the first time in national universities in Nouakchott. He emphasized that these efforts aim to improve the level of scientific research and strengthen advanced academic training pathways. The President also highlighted the expansion of the University of Nouakchott Al Asriya, which has allowed for the enrollment of over 11,000 new students.
The President concluded by emphasizing that the process of reform and development of education is ongoing and that many challenges remain to be addressed. However, he expressed optimism about overcoming some of these challenges and noted that the country's development process has begun to move in the right direction, following the path of Chinguitty and other ancient scientific cities, which is based on science, knowledge, and work.
