In a significant development, the hospital in Sikasso, Mauritania, and ten local artisans have benefited from solar installations as part of the social initiatives of Transition President, General Assimi Goïta. The Agence malienne de presse et de publicité (AMAP) reported that the project was inaugurated on September 19 in Sikasso. The initiative aims to improve the working conditions of the hospital and the artisans.
The solar installation at the hospital, comprising photovoltaic panels, storage batteries, and intelligent inverters, has a capacity of 1,075 kWh. According to Aguibou Dembélé, Special Advisor to the Head of State, the project seeks to ensure the continuity of medical care by addressing the issue of electricity shortages. He emphasized that the President has instructed the installation of solar panels in 100 health centers nationwide.
The event was attended by regional Governor, Kanté Marie Claire Dembélé, and several administrative and health officials. The Governor highlighted the importance of a stable electricity supply for the hospital's operations, including lighting, medical equipment, and preserving medications. She also noted that the solar energy will enable artisans to improve their working conditions and production capacity.
The ten artisans who received solar equipment include eight metalworkers, a woodworker, and a tailor. Sory Diaby, one of the beneficiaries, mentioned that limited access to electricity had previously hindered his production. The solar installations are expected to enhance their productivity and overall work experience.
Dr. Assetou Cissouma, Director-General of the hospital, expressed her appreciation for the project, stating that it will strengthen the hospital's power supply and improve patient care. The ceremony included the official handover of the installations, a symbolic ribbon-cutting, and a tour of the solar equipment.
