Mauritanian telecommunications company Rimatel has begun operating its 5G network in three cities: Nouakchott, Nouadhibou, and Rosso. The launch was announced at an event held at the Muchtar Ould Daddah Old Conference Palace in the capital, attended by the Minister of Digital Transformation. Rimatel's CEO, Mohamed Ahmed Abdel Rahman, highlighted the company's strategic investment in infrastructure and national skills since its inception in 2022.

As part of the launch, Rimatel signed an agreement with French group Orange, allowing it to benefit from the group's international services and provide training opportunities for its staff. The company has established a national optical fiber network connecting major cities and economic centers, and has enhanced its international capacity through several submarine cable routes.

Rimatel has chosen the number 7 as a prefix for its subscriber numbers, which it describes as a "spiritual number" carrying connotations of blessing and trust. The company's CEO noted that this decision was not coincidental, and highlighted the significance of the number in Mauritanian culture.

The launch of 5G services by Rimatel follows the allocation of licenses to four companies, including Rimatel, by the Mauritanian Communications Regulatory Authority in May. The licenses were valued at approximately 11 billion ouguiya, with Rimatel's license worth around 2.9 billion ouguiya. The company aims to extend its 5G coverage to the entire country before the start of Ramadan.

Rimatel's 5G network is expected to provide faster data speeds and greater connectivity for Mauritanian citizens. The company has not yet announced the prices of its 5G packages or the number of stations activated in the first phase. However, it has stated that it plans to invest in infrastructure and national skills to support its growth.

The launch of Rimatel's 5G network is seen as a significant development in Mauritania's telecommunications sector. The company faces competition from other operators, including Muriatel, Shinecell, and Matel, which have also been allocated 5G licenses. Rimatel's investment in infrastructure and national skills is expected to contribute to the growth of the sector.

Rimatel's CEO emphasized the company's commitment to providing high-quality services to its customers. The company plans to continue investing in infrastructure and national skills to support its growth and expansion. With its 5G network now live in three cities, Rimatel is poised to play a major role in Mauritania's digital transformation.
