The Coordination of Nouadhibou Retirees has stated that retirees in the city are living in difficult conditions and has called on the government to meet their demands. The group's leader, Sheikh Jallow, has emphasized the need for improved healthcare for retirees and the elderly, enabling them to access medical care and necessary medications more easily.

Sheikh Jallow expressed hope for better healthcare coverage from the National Health Insurance Fund, particularly for essential medications to treat chronic diseases, which are sometimes unavailable in accredited pharmacies. He also requested a comprehensive review of pensions, with special attention to low-income retirees, and the possibility of providing monthly support to elderly individuals not receiving pensions.

The leader of the retirees' coordination stressed the need to settle the remaining 40% increase in pensions, announced by President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani in 2021, for private sector retirees, along with retroactive payment of their entitlements. Jallow also called for establishing a permanent mechanism to adjust pensions in line with price fluctuations and declining purchasing power.

Furthermore, Sheikh Jallow suggested creating a government agency dedicated to retirees, issuing them electronic identification cards, and representing them in bodies addressing social protection issues. He also requested financing for income-generating activities for retirees, providing opportunities to enhance their economic independence and promote solidarity.

Nouadhibou Mayor, El Kacem Ould Belali, expressed solidarity with retirees, endorsed their demands, and urged the government to fulfill them. The mayor emphasized the importance of supporting this group, which has significantly contributed to the country's development and now requires assistance.

The retirees' demands focus on improving their living conditions, healthcare, and financial stability. Their situation highlights the challenges faced by retirees in Mauritania and the need for government intervention to address these issues.
