The Mauritanian Ministry of Mines and Industry organized a consultative workshop in Nouakchott on September 29, 2026, to discuss the update of the country's mining code. The workshop was attended by various stakeholders and actors in the sector, including companies operating in exploration and exploitation, as well as associations and unions active in artisanal mining. The update of the mining code is part of the ministry's efforts to modernize the legal framework governing the sector.

The current mining code, which dates back to 2008, has undergone several amendments and additions in 2009, 2012, and 2014. The ministry aims to create a modern and comprehensive legal framework that balances the promotion of investment and the protection of national resources and the environment. The update of the mining code is considered a crucial step towards achieving this goal.

Mustafa Fati, Director of Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Mines and Industry, emphasized the importance of the mining sector to the national economy and its potential for sustainable development. He highlighted the need for a modern and integrated legal framework that takes into account the changes in the sector at the national and international levels.

Mohamed Ould Amhamed, Director General of Mines and Geology, stated that the sector is working on a comprehensive update of the mining code, which includes various components of mining activities, including industrial and artisanal mining. The update aims to create a unified and integrated legal framework that responds to the current needs and challenges of the sector.

The update of the mining code includes several important amendments aimed at promoting sustainable use of national mineral resources and aligning with international developments in the sector. The new draft code includes incentives for investors to enhance the attractiveness of the Mauritanian mining sector and encourage investments.

The update also includes a review of exemptions and provisions to reassess and develop them in line with current developments and objectives for the sector's growth. Regarding state participation in exploitation companies, the current participation rate of 10% of capital is proposed to be increased to 15%, with the possibility of purchasing an additional 10% stake.

The consultative approach adopted in preparing the mining code update is expected to enrich the project and lead to a comprehensive and balanced legal text that aligns with the developments in the mining sector at the national and international levels. The update aims to enhance the sector's contribution to the national economy and achieve sustainable development.
