The Mauritanian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and representatives of student unions have reached an agreement to reduce university transportation costs and improve services. The accord was achieved after a week of negotiations amid student protests demanding better study conditions and university services. The agreement addresses key student concerns, including transportation costs and representation in university decision-making bodies.

Under the agreement, students will benefit from a monthly subscription of 3,500 MRO, allowing 50 trips on rapid transport buses at 70 ouguiyas per trip. For traditional lines not served by rapid transport buses, the fare will remain at 50 ouguiyas per trip, with payment made through an electronic ticketing application. Additionally, special ticket packages will be introduced for traditional transportation, including a 10-ticket package valid for 15 days and a 20-ticket package valid for a month.

The agreement also provides for the restoration of student representation on administrative and pedagogical councils, a key demand of the student unions. A joint commission will be established to develop a unified legal framework governing student union activities in universities. This move aims to strengthen student participation in university decision-making and promote collaboration between students and the ministry.

The agreement establishes joint commissions between the ministry and student federation representatives to examine other demands. These demands include revising scholarship allocation criteria, improving university services, ensuring transparency in internal and external scholarship distribution, rehabilitating excluded students, and increasing master's program places. The commissions will work to address these concerns and implement the agreed-upon measures.

In response to the agreement, the Front étudiant pour la défense des droits et des acquis has temporarily suspended its protests. This decision allows the joint commissions to discuss outstanding issues and implement the agreed-upon measures. The suspension of protests is seen as a positive step towards resolving the concerns of Mauritanian students and improving the overall university experience.

The agreement marks a significant step towards resolving the concerns of Mauritanian students, who have been protesting for better study conditions and university services. The student unions have been pressing for improvements in various areas, including transportation, accommodation, and academic support. By addressing these concerns, the ministry aims to create a more conducive learning environment for students.

The implementation of the agreement will be closely monitored by both the ministry and student unions. The joint commissions established to address student concerns will play a crucial role in ensuring that the agreed-upon measures are effectively implemented. The agreement is expected to have a positive impact on the university experience for Mauritanian students, who have been advocating for improved services and conditions.
