Mauritania's Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug has emphasized that Africa is facing an increasingly complex strategic environment. He cited the intersection of conflicts, terrorism, violent extremism, governance and development challenges, climate change, and trans-border threats. The minister also highlighted emerging risks, including cybersecurity, maritime security, and technological advancements. These concerns were raised during the opening of a high-level training program in Nouakchott.

The training program, titled "Silencing the Guns in Africa: Tools of the African Peace and Security Architecture, Challenges, and Strategic Paths," aims to enhance the capacity for strategic thinking and anticipation of risks. Merzoug stressed the need to develop peace and security tools, prevent conflicts, and build sustainable African solutions. The program is part of efforts to address the continent's security challenges.

Merzoug noted that silencing the guns in Africa should not be viewed solely as a security objective. Rather, it is a comprehensive and multidimensional project that requires addressing the root causes of conflicts, strengthening institutions, and promoting good governance. He emphasized the importance of investing in human capital and creating conditions for sustainable peace.

The African Union has made significant strides in establishing the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA). The APSA provides tools for early warning, conflict prevention, mediation, peacebuilding, and peace support operations. Merzoug acknowledged these efforts while reaffirming the need for continued progress.

The Mauritanian Foreign Minister highlighted the interconnected nature of security challenges in Africa. He emphasized that addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive approach that incorporates multiple stakeholders and strategies. This approach should prioritize prevention, cooperation, and sustainable solutions.

The high-level training program brings together participants from various backgrounds to enhance their knowledge and skills. The program's curriculum focuses on the African Peace and Security Architecture, conflict prevention, and strategic planning. By building the capacity of African leaders and policymakers, the program aims to contribute to the continent's peace and security efforts.

Merzoug's remarks underscore the urgency of addressing Africa's security challenges.
