The defense team of former Mauritanian President Mohamed Abdel Aziz has urged authorities to transfer him to France for urgent medical attention, citing a deterioration in his health. In a press conference held in Nouakchott, the lawyers revealed that Abdel Aziz suffers from chronic conditions, including heart and kidney problems, as well as other health issues. They emphasized that his current health situation requires specialized medical care.
Abdel Aziz was arrested in June 2021 and initially enjoyed good health, but his condition worsened after being placed in solitary confinement without access to sunlight or communication. Six months later, he suffered a stroke and bleeding, necessitating hospitalization. Although doctors recommended a special diet and a calm lifestyle in January 2022, Abdel Aziz was prevented from receiving medical treatment in France.
In June 2024, the then-Minister of Justice, along with the Prosecutor General and the Director of Prisons, met with Abdel Aziz's lawyers and assured them that authorities would take responsibility for his health. Two doctors were tasked with preparing a medical report on his condition, which recommended immediate transfer to a specialized center for surgery, preferably in Europe.
Despite this recommendation, its implementation has been delayed. Abdel Aziz suffered a severe heart attack in June 2025, requiring a second catheterization. His lawyers have since contacted the new Minister of Justice, sending letters requesting his transfer for medical treatment abroad, but have received no response.
A medical committee comprising three doctors from the Ministries of Justice and Health was formed, but the lawyers argue that this committee's assessment is insufficient, as they did not examine Abdel Aziz personally. The committee's report does not replace the need for a thorough medical evaluation by a specialized team or the implementation of previous medical recommendations.
The defense team has renewed its appeal for Abdel Aziz's immediate transfer to France for medical treatment, requesting that a doctor from the specialized treatment center be allowed to attend and that they be granted access to his medical file and information on his detention conditions.
The lawyers have warned that they hold the authorities fully responsible for any harm caused to Abdel Aziz's life or health and have called on journalists, human rights organizations, and diplomatic missions in Nouakchott to monitor the case.
