On September 29, General Moussa Soumaré, Governor of the Kayes Region in Mauritania, conducted a site visit to assess the progress of renovation works on three training institutes and one elementary school. The institutions visited included the Institute of Teacher Training (IFM), the Industrial and Tertiary Vocational Training Institutes (IFP-Industrial and IFP-Tertiary), and Lafia E Elementary School in Lafiabougou. The renovation works are being carried out by the Kayes Regional Council.
General Soumaré expressed satisfaction with the progress of the renovation works, despite the tight deadline ahead of the 2026-2027 academic year. He attributed delays to unforeseen constraints, including difficulties in procuring construction materials. The Governor noted that several classrooms are expected to be ready for use by October 1, with remaining work primarily focused on exterior areas.
The renovation works at the three institutes are being financed by the Kayes Regional Council. General Soumaré commended the council's initiative to upgrade the educational infrastructure, emphasizing the need for improved learning and teaching conditions. He also praised the contractor for its efforts, despite challenges, and expressed confidence that the works will be completed soon.
At Lafia E Elementary School, the delegation observed the installation of toilet facilities for students and teachers, as well as the distribution of school equipment, all funded by UNICEF. General Soumaré welcomed the quality of the work and extended gratitude to the UN agency for its support to the Kayes Region.
General Soumaré took the opportunity to commend the President of the Kayes Regional Council and his team for their efforts to improve the region's educational infrastructure. He invited partners and well-wishers to contribute to the development of the education sector in the region.
