Mauritania's President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani recently visited the city of Wadane, where he urged the private sector to invest in interior cities, particularly in tourism and economic activities. The President made these remarks during a meeting with local officials, notables, and stakeholders from the Adrar region.
The President emphasized that the main challenge after providing infrastructure and basic services is to create economic activities that can retain residents in interior cities and provide job opportunities for young people. He expressed his satisfaction with the warm welcome he received in Wadane, highlighting the city's hospitality and generosity. The President also mentioned that this visit aims to assess the situation in Adrar and listen to the concerns and aspirations of its residents.
During the meeting, the President reviewed several projects aimed at connecting isolated areas to the national road network. He mentioned that several cities, including Ambik, Lhouash, and Adel Bakro, have already been connected to the national network. Additionally, tenders have been launched to connect other cities, including Atouil, Ain Farbah, and Bostileh. The President also announced that studies are underway to build roads linking Wadane, Oulata, Tichit, and Oumbo to the national road network.
In the area of isolating production zones, the President mentioned that a road connecting Karmassine and the port of N'Gakou has been completed, and work is ongoing to connect the coastal region of Aftout. He also launched a program aimed at providing basic services to isolated areas, which has benefited the Adrar region. The President assured that this program will continue to expand to other areas.
Regarding the city of Wadane, the President promised that the road construction project will be included in the 2027 state budget. He also assured that the water sector will continue to work to find a permanent solution to the city's water problems. A specialized study on water exploration is currently underway, which is expected to be completed within three months. The President also mentioned that a new drilling program for deep water is being planned.
The President emphasized that he is working to change the mentality that makes Nouakchott the primary destination for those seeking medical treatment, education, or employment. He encouraged residents of Wadane to stay in their city, highlighting the importance of preserving the city's history and significance. The President also urged the private sector to invest in tourism and economic activities in interior cities, stressing that public investments in infrastructure and services should encourage private investors to expand their economic presence.
The meeting was attended by several ministers, including those responsible for education, health, energy, agriculture, trade, and water. They presented reports on the achievements and projects implemented in the Adrar region, as well as future plans to promote local development. The mayor of Wadane, Mohamed Ould Abab, welcomed the President and reaffirmed the city's support for his development program.
