Rose Idibia, the mother of Nigerian music star Innocent “2Baba” Idibia, has spoken out about the numerous controversies surrounding her son. In an interview with Vanguard newspaper, Mrs. Idibia stated that many of the claims made about 2Baba online and in newspapers are not true. She expressed her awareness of the truth despite the attacks and allegations against her son. According to her, 2Baba knows himself and understands that the attacks may hurt him, but his knowledge of the truth helps him withstand them.
2Baba has been at the center of several controversies since announcing his separation from Annie Macaulay in January 2025 and unveiling Natasha Osawaru, a member of the Edo State House of Assembly, as his partner in February 2025. The controversies included reports of altercations involving him and Natasha, including an incident during an Instagram Live session with Daddy Freeze and another at the opening of the “90s Lounge” in Abuja. There were also reports that the singer was arrested in the United Kingdom over an alleged altercation involving the lawmaker.
Mrs. Idibia said that what kept 2Baba going is that some of the things published about him in the dailies and online are not true. She stated that if people are attacking you from every quarter, but you know yourself, it might hurt you, but because you know the truth, you can weather it. Mrs. Idibia added that she knows her son and what he can and cannot do. She expressed gratitude to God for helping 2Baba navigate the challenges, describing him as someone who knows what he wants and has forged ahead to make it in music.
According to Mrs. Idibia, 2Baba has fulfilled his biggest ambition as a singer, which was to make a name for himself and leave a mark on the music industry. She said God has continued to stand by her son despite the controversies surrounding him. Mrs. Idibia noted that many people might have struggled to cope with the criticism and reports 2Baba faced online and in newspapers. She described the singer as someone deeply loved by the public, citing instances where fans crowded around him, hoping to touch him and take photographs with him.
Mrs. Idibia said that 2Baba is a legend in Nigeria's music industry, and his earlier song, “Whoever God has made, nobody can curse,” has become a reality in his life. She believes that God has already chosen 2Baba to be great in music, and all the criticisms and attacks have not affected him as they should. Mrs. Idibia also mentioned that the public loves 2Baba, citing his birthday party as an example.
As a retired teacher, Mrs. Idibia revealed that the family had initially envisioned careers in law, medicine, or engineering for 2Baba. However, they had a premonition that he might become a musician. She said that 2Baba's dedication to music eventually convinced them to let go of their plans and encourage him to pursue his passion. Mrs. Idibia emphasized the importance of allowing children to pursue their interests, stating that it can kill their interest and affect their performance in other fields.
Mrs. Idibia expressed her elation whenever she listens to her son's songs, adding that his music reminds her of his exceptional talent. 2Baba began his music career in 1996, composing and singing jingles at the GB Fan Club at Enugu State Broadcasting Services (ESBS). He later formed the Plantashun Boiz with Blackface and Faze, releasing Body and Soul in 2000 and Sold Out in 2003. After the group broke up in 2004, 2Baba returned to his solo career.
