A 40-year-old man, Ifeanacho Ifeanyi, has been sentenced to two life terms in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court for trafficking a woman from Johannesburg to a Malvern brothel. The woman was lured under false pretences, raped, and forced into prostitution. The sentencing comes after a thorough investigation by the Hawks, who received a complaint of suspicious activities at a property in Hopewell Street, Malvern, on September 5, 2022.
The Hawks, led by Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo, responded to the complaint and found that the premises was being used as a brothel. Six occupants were found, and one female was identified as a victim. She was taken to hospital for a medical examination, and a thorough investigation was conducted. The investigation revealed that the victim was lured by Mapule Tshibangila, 35, from Johannesburg under false pretences of a legitimate job opportunity in Durban.
According to Captain Mhlongo, the victim was raped, assaulted, and kept against her will by Ifeanacho Ifeanyi. The Hawks established that the victim was lured for prostitution purposes and that other occupants were using the premises for prostitution. Cases of human trafficking and keeping a brothel were opened at the Malvern police station, and additional charges were added during the investigation.
Ifeanacho Ifeanyi was sentenced to two life imprisonment terms for rape and human trafficking. He received additional sentences of three years for kidnapping, five years for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and seven years for procurement of a female for prostitution. Ifeanacho Ifeanyi's co-accused, Mapule Tshibangila, was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for human trafficking, three years for kidnapping, 13 years for rape, and three years for keeping a brothel. The sentences for both Ifeanacho Ifeanyi and Mapule Tshibangila will run concurrently. KZN Acting Provincial Head of Hawks, Brigadier Zenobia Mulligan, welcomed the sentencing and applauded the members for their good work.
The rescue of the victim was made possible by residents in the Malvern area who reported the brothel to the authorities. The Hawks' Economic Protected Resources (EPR) section played a crucial role in the investigation and arrest of the accused. The sentencing serves as a significant victory in the fight against human trafficking and related crimes in South Africa.
The case highlights the importance of community involvement in reporting suspicious activities and the efforts of law enforcement agencies in combating human trafficking. The sentences handed down to Ifeanacho Ifeanyi and Mapule Tshibangila demonstrate the severity with which the courts view these crimes.
