A 38-year-old man from North West, South Africa, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping his girlfriend after an argument over money escalated into a violent attack. The incident occurred on December 8, 2024, at a home in Kanana, where the 30-year-old woman was visiting. According to police spokesperson Colonel Anne Magakoe, an argument broke out after the woman questioned him about money she had left in the bedroom.
During the altercation, the accused allegedly pushed the victim onto the bed and raped her. The case was investigated by the Klerksdorp Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, led by Sergeant Ramontshiwe Abel Roberts. The investigation ultimately resulted in the matter being brought before court, where the accused, Lethlogonolo Andrew Bontes, was convicted of rape and assault by the Klerksdorp Sexual Offences Court on September 30, 2026.
The court sentenced Bontes to life imprisonment for rape and a further 12 months behind bars for assault. This sentence was imposed nearly two years after the attack, and it is the maximum sentence allowed for rape. Magakoe confirmed that Bontes had also been sentenced to an additional 12 months’ imprisonment for assault, making his total sentence life imprisonment plus 12 months.
North West Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Adams commended investigating officer Roberts and prosecutor Wilna Cordier for their work in securing the conviction. Adams praised the pair for their commitment and dedication to securing justice for the victim. He also emphasised that police would continue to prioritise cases involving sexual offences and domestic violence.
The police spokesperson, Colonel Anne Magakoe, provided details of the case, including the circumstances surrounding the argument and the violent attack that followed. According to Magakoe, the incident was a disturbing example of how quickly an argument can escalate into a violent and traumatic event. The police have welcomed the sentence, saying it sends a strong message to perpetrators of sexual offences.
The Klerksdorp Sexual Offences Court found Bontes guilty on both charges of rape and assault, and the life sentence handed down is a reflection of the seriousness of the crime. The police and the court system have been working together to ensure that perpetrators of sexual offences are brought to justice, and this case is an example of that effort.
The police have reiterated their commitment to prioritising cases involving sexual offences and domestic violence, and to working with prosecutors to ensure that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions. This case demonstrates the importance of reporting incidents of sexual violence and the impact that can be made when victims and investigators work together to bring perpetrators to justice.
