In Mali, October is celebrated as the Solidarity and Fight Against Exclusion Month, a period dedicated to national mobilization in favor of vulnerable people and the promotion of solidarity and social inclusion. This year's 31st edition saw President of the Transition, General Assimi Goïta, pay a visit to Namory Keïta, the 114-year-old doyen of Bamako. This gesture is part of the government's efforts to honor elderly citizens and promote social cohesion.

Namory Keïta, born in 1912 in Kouroukanfouka, commune of Siby, in the Mandé region, is a direct descendant of Soundiata Keïta. He has 12 children and 51 grandchildren, and has been living in Djicoroni Para since 1962, where he was one of the first occupants. President Goïta was accompanied by Health and Social Development Minister, Major Doctor Assa Badiallo Touré, and the national sponsor of the Solidarity Month, 72-year-old Noumoudion Togola, who was recently admitted to the baccalaureate.

During the visit, President Goïta presented Keïta with a ram, kola nuts, a blanket, and a symbolic envelope. The elderly man expressed his joy and gratitude for the honor bestowed upon him by the highest authorities. Keïta, who has been the doyen of Bamako for six consecutive years, after serving as vice-doyen for four years, prayed for the return of stability in the country and for those who have fallen for the nation, including late General Sadio Camara.

Minister Assa Badiallo Touré emphasized that solidarity is an integral part of Malian culture, which is why the theme of this year's Solidarity Month is "Solidarity, a lever for promoting culture and civic education." She announced that the President, Prime Minister, institutional presidents, and governors will be visiting different regions throughout the month to honor the elderly.

The minister's statement is an appeal for social cohesion, urging each citizen to take responsibility for promoting solidarity in their neighborhoods and communities. For her, solidarity is a collective responsibility that requires everyone's involvement. Meanwhile, Namory Keïta is reported to be in good health and enjoys a great degree of autonomy in his daily life.

As part of the government's efforts to promote solidarity, several activities are planned throughout the month, including visits to vulnerable groups and elderly citizens. The authorities aim to foster a culture of solidarity and social inclusion, particularly among the youth.

The visit to Namory Keïta is a testament to the government's commitment to honoring elderly citizens and promoting social cohesion. The elderly man's remarkable life story and his status as a symbol of wisdom and experience serve as an inspiration to the nation.
