The "Consume Local" month was launched in the Koutiala region on October 26, under the presidency of the region's governor, General Harouna Samaké. The ceremony was attended by administrative and customary authorities, the mayor of the urban commune, regional directors, representatives of technical services, and economic operators. This year's edition is themed "Consume Local, a Factor of Regional Integration and Economic Sovereignty of the UEMOA in the Face of Global Trade Changes."

In his address, Governor Samaké emphasized that global trade changes require collective reflection on consumption habits, economic choices, and responsibility in building a stronger and more resilient economy. He noted that promoting local production is a strategic lever for strengthening economic autonomy and reducing excessive dependence on imports. The governor urged that "Consume Local" should not be just a slogan but a genuine economic, social, and strategic choice.

The "Consume Local" initiative aims to support producers, encourage local processing units, stimulate businesses, and create sustainable jobs for young people. By prioritizing products from national industries, consumers contribute to maintaining wealth within communities, improving producers' incomes, and strengthening the country's economic autonomy. According to the president of the Koutiala Chamber of Commerce and Industry, this initiative is a first in the region and seeks to stimulate the consumption of national products.

The launch ceremony included an exhibition stand visit, where the governor and his delegation appreciated the diversity of products presented and the region's economic potential. Through this initiative, Koutiala aims to promote local production, strengthen the regional economic fabric, and consolidate a more autonomous and sustainable economy. "Consume Local" is seen as a major lever for creating wealth, valorizing national know-how, and promoting regional economic integration.

The initiative is part of the social works of the President of the Transition, General Assimi Goïta, in the month of solidarity and fight against exclusion. Similar initiatives have been reported in other regions, including Ségou, where 200 food kits were distributed to underprivileged people. The "Consume Local" month is expected to contribute to the country's economic development and reinforce the government's efforts to promote local production.

The event also highlights the importance of regional integration and economic sovereignty within the UEMOA. Mali and other member states are working to strengthen economic ties and promote local production to reduce dependence on imports. The "Consume Local" initiative is a step towards achieving this goal and promoting sustainable economic growth in the region.
