The World Mental Health Day celebrations in Mali took place on October 19, 2026, at the CHU de Point G, where a press conference was held to raise awareness about the importance of mental health. The conference, themed "Mental health is everyone's concern: Let's listen to the voices of those affected," brought together healthcare experts, including Professor Souleymane Papa Coulibaly, Head of the Psychiatric Department at Point G Hospital, and Dr. Mamadou Coulibaly, Representative of the Ministry of Health and Social Development.
The event was opened by Youssouf Diakité, Deputy Director General of Point G Hospital, who emphasized the significance of mental health as an integral part of overall health. Diakité noted that mental health is often stigmatized and that it is essential to educate the public about its importance. He also encouraged the media to support the National Strategic Plan for Mental Health and Psychosocial Support, launched by the Ministry of Health and its partners in 2025.
Professor Souleymane Papa Coulibaly called for the integration of mental health into the country's healthcare system, stressing that there can be no health without mental health. He cited statistics showing that approximately one in eight people in Mali suffer from anxiety, fear, and other mental health disorders, not excluding those related to substance abuse. Coulibaly also highlighted the shortage of qualified healthcare professionals and facilities to address these issues.
The CHU de Point G has 110 beds, with 58 operational, and provides consultation services to around 3,000 patients annually. However, only 3 to 5 percent of patients receive hospitalization. Coulibaly emphasized the need to bring mental health services closer to the population and to intensify awareness campaigns to combat stigma associated with mental illness.
A person who has experienced mental illness shared their testimony, stating that it is possible to recover from mental health disorders and be productive. This testimony reinforced the calls for greater understanding and support for those affected by mental health issues. The event provided a platform for experts and individuals affected by mental illness to share their experiences and advocate for change.
The Representative of the Ministry of Health and Social Development, Dr. Mamadou Coulibaly, invited the media to take ownership of the National Strategic Plan for Mental Health and Psychosocial Support. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the ministry, healthcare professionals, and the media to raise awareness and promote mental health.
The World Mental Health Day celebrations in Mali highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach to address mental health issues. Key stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, government representatives, and individuals affected by mental illness, called for greater investment in mental health services and a reduction in stigma associated with mental illness.
