The 18th edition of the Salon international de l'Artisanat de Ouagadougou (SIAO) has kicked off in Ouagadougou, featuring a joint village by the Alliance des états du Sahel (AES) comprising Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. This initiative aims to harmonize policies and measures among the three member countries to foster solidarity and socio-economic development. The official launch took place on October 31, 2026.
The joint village is an innovation and a showcase of the rich cultural heritage of the three countries. Mali's Minister of Handicrafts, Serge Gnaniodem Poda, expressed pride in opening the village and touring the various stands to witness the diverse cultural products on display. He emphasized that the village's objective is to enable the structures of the three AES countries to come together, share experiences, identify achievements and shortcomings, and find solutions to challenges hindering the handicraft sector's progress.
According to Minister Poda, the theme of this edition, "African handicraft and industrialization: what synergy for better organization and valorization of local products and cultural heritage?", will be discussed within the AES village. The village serves as a platform for the three countries to exhibit their handicrafts, highlighting their similarities in products, heritage, and culture. Madagascar and Ghana, as invited countries, have also been invited to participate in the event.
The AES village is a significant step towards promoting pan-Africanism and cooperation among member countries. Minister Poda noted that the President of Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, during the official opening ceremony, called for a new vision for the handicraft sector.
