Lotus Resources Limited is preparing to dispatch its first uranium shipment from the Kayelekera Mine in Karonga District, Malawi, by the end of the week. This milestone marks a significant achievement for the company after resuming mining operations at the site last year. The Kayelekera Mine, which began open-cast mining in July 2008, is projected to produce 2.4 million pounds of uranium annually at full capacity.
The company has secured key approvals required to transport its first uranium product from Malawi via Zambia to Namibia, and then ship it through the Port of Walvis Bay to Orano CE's conversion facility in France. These approvals include clearance from the Malawian Atomic Energy Regulatory Agency, a Zambian transport licence through logistics partner Alistair Group, and necessary permits from Namibian authorities.
The initial shipment consists of four containers, representing approximately 145,000 pounds of uranium oxide (U₃O₈). Lotus Managing Director Greg Bittar confirmed that the first product is expected to leave in the first week of November. Although the value of the uranium was not disclosed, Bittar mentioned that the current spot price is around $90 per pound, with contracted values typically at a discount.
The Kayelekera Mine is a significant contributor to Malawi's economy, with the potential to generate between $190 million (approximately K330 billion) in annual economic benefits. The Malawi Government holds a 15 percent equity stake in the mine under a Mining Development Agreement, while Lotus Resources Limited owns the remaining 85 percent.
The resumption of operations at Kayelekera follows a period of inactivity, with the mine now targeting its first export of uranium ore concentrate from Walvis Bay in November. The company's financial disclosures will reportedly provide more information on the value of the shipments in the future.
Lotus Resources Limited is working closely with its logistics partners to ensure the smooth transportation of the uranium shipment. The company's Managing Director expressed confidence in the successful dispatch of the first shipment, marking a major milestone for the Kayelekera Mine.
The Kayelekera Mine's first uranium shipment is a significant development for Malawi's mining sector, demonstrating the country's potential for growth and economic benefits from the industry. The mine's full capacity production of 2.4 million pounds of uranium annually is expected to have a positive impact on the country's economy.
