A total of 104 boreholes have been rehabilitated in Malawi's Chitipa South Constituency, providing improved access to safe water for residents. The rehabilitation initiative, undertaken by Pacific Limited, aims to complement the government's efforts to provide safe water to rural communities. The project covers traditional authorities Nthalire, Mwenewenya, Wavikhaza, and Nthengatenga, as well as Sub-T/A Mwenekayilizi.
The rehabilitation of the boreholes is expected to greatly benefit the local communities, who previously relied on unprotected sources to fetch water. Senior Chief Nthalire expressed relief that women will no longer have to walk long distances to access potable water. He urged community members to take care of the facilities to ensure they serve for many years.
The project was initiated after Chitipa South legislator Chance Munthali partnered with Pacific Limited to improve access to safe water in the constituency. Munthali discovered that over 100 boreholes were non-functional across the constituency after taking office in September 2025. He emphasized the importance of taking care of existing facilities while working towards long-term solutions.
Pacific Limited's chief executive officer, Faizal Aboo, stated that the company aims to help communities access safe water within reach. He noted that water is essential for life, and the company wants to complement the government's efforts to provide safe water to rural communities. Pacific Limited rolled out the borehole rehabilitation initiative in 2015 as part of its corporate social responsibility.
Local residents have welcomed the project, with Eliness Kaonga, a mother from Mahowe Village, expressing gratitude for the initiative. She noted that the high population and limited number of functional water sources had made it challenging for communities to access safe water for consumption. Kaonga appealed to other well-wishers to emulate Pacific Limited's gesture.
The rehabilitation of the boreholes is expected to have a significant impact on the health and well-being of the local communities. With access to safe water, residents will be protected from waterborne diseases such as cholera, particularly as the rainy season approaches. The project is a significant step towards improving the quality of life for residents in Chitipa South Constituency.
The partnership between Pacific Limited and the Chitipa South legislator demonstrates the importance of collaboration in addressing community challenges. The project's success will depend on the community's ability to maintain the facilities, ensuring that the benefits of the project are sustained over time. The initiative serves as a model for other organizations to support community development projects.
