On Friday, former President John Dramani Mahama visited the Hohoe Municipality in the Volta Region to sympathize with victims of the September 28 flood disaster. The flood, triggered by a torrential nine-hour downpour on September 27, caused the River Dayi to overflow its banks, submerging over 400 homes and displacing more than 5,000 residents across seven communities. Mahama presented assorted relief items to the victims at Hohoe Zongo.
The flood disaster, which primarily occurred on September 28, affected several communities, including Hohoe Zongo, in the Hohoe Municipality. Mahama stated that climate change was leading to "extreme weather phenomena," citing excessive rainfall and drought as examples. He noted that the continuous rainfall in Togo had brought a significant amount of water down the River Dayi, causing the flood in low-lying areas of Hohoe.
During his visit, Mahama announced that two of his Ministers, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey and Mr. Kwami Governs Agbodza, had already made donations to the affected victims. Additionally, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) had also provided relief items. Mahama's donation was presented to the victims through Mr. Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, the Member of Parliament for Hohoe; Mr. Prosper Kumi, the Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive; and Mr. James Gunu, the Regional Minister.
Mahama revealed that the owner of Dzata Cement, his younger brother, had pledged 5,000 bags of cement to help those whose houses had been destroyed. He entrusted the distribution of the relief items to Mr. Tsekpo, Mr. Kumi, and Mr. Gunu, ensuring a fair allocation to the affected individuals. The former President acknowledged the support of various individuals, including Togbega Gabusu VII, the Paramount Chief of the Gbi Traditional Area, and other officials.
Togbega Gabusu VII expressed gratitude to Mahama for the relief support and his visit to the flood disaster areas, describing it as a demonstration of his paternal care for the nation. Mr. James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, also thanked Mahama for his continued support to the Region during natural disasters.
The relief items donated by Mahama aimed to provide assistance to the affected victims, who were struggling to cope with the aftermath of the flood disaster. The donation was seen as a gesture of goodwill and a demonstration of Mahama's commitment to supporting the affected communities.
The flood disaster in Hohoe Municipality has highlighted the need for disaster preparedness and management in the region. The incident has also underscored the importance of addressing climate change, which has been linked to the increasing frequency of extreme weather events.
