President John Mahama has announced an additional GH¢250 million allocation in the 2027 budget to complete the Blekusu Phase Two Coastal Protection Project. The project aims to protect an eight-kilometre stretch of coastline in the Volta Region, covering Blekusu, Agavedzi, Salakope, Amutsinu and Adina. This move responds to years of appeals from traditional leaders and residents who have been affected by tidal waves destroying homes and displacing residents.

The Blekusu Phase Two project involves constructing 37 groynes, reinforcing embankments and restoring sand dunes. It also includes plans for a modern fish market, cold storage and fish processing facilities for the affected communities. Amandi Holdings Limited is handling the construction under the West Africa Coastal Areas Management Program (WACA). WACA combines engineering works with environmental restoration and support for communities affected by erosion, flooding and pollution.

President Mahama made the announcement at the 2026 Hogbetsotso Za Festival in Anloga. He expressed satisfaction with the progress of WACA and acknowledged the concerns of traditional leaders and residents regarding the project's continuity. The President emphasized the importance of completing the project without interruption to address the coastal erosion issues affecting the region.

The coastal protection project is part of a broader initiative to address erosion and flooding in West Africa. President Mahama also announced that GH¢685 million has been allocated to begin coastal protection work under the wider West African Coastal Areas Resilience Investment Project. This project covers lagoon and watershed rehabilitation and livelihood support for young people, women and persons with disabilities in targeted areas.

During the festival, President Mahama cautioned traditional authorities and residents against the destruction of mangroves and coastal vegetation. He warned that this destruction weakens the shoreline and leaves communities more exposed to erosion. The President called for stronger local efforts to protect the natural environment and preserve the coastal ecosystem.

The Blekusu Phase Two Coastal Protection Project is a significant intervention aimed at mitigating the impact of coastal erosion on local communities. For years, families in Blekusu and nearby fishing communities have watched the Atlantic Ocean creep closer, swallowing homes, farmland and livelihoods. The project's completion is expected to provide relief to residents and protect the region's coastline.

President Mahama's announcement demonstrates the government's commitment to addressing the coastal erosion challenges in the Volta Region. The allocation of additional funds ensures the project's continuity and completion, providing a long-term solution to the region's coastal protection needs. The President's call to action on environmental protection also highlights the importance of preserving the coastal ecosystem.
