The Lagos State Sports Trust Fund (LSSTF) has distributed sports equipment to the 57 Local Government and Local Council Development Areas of Lagos State. The event took place at the BOS Hall, Lagos Television (LTV) Broadcasting Complex, Lateef Jakande Road, Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos. This initiative aims to promote grassroots sports development, youth engagement, talent discovery, social inclusion, and wealth creation.
The Chairman of LSSTF, Wahid Oshodi, stated that the distribution of sports equipment is a demonstration of the administration's commitment to grassroots sports development. He mentioned that the Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, gave a mandate to restore Lagos as the undisputed home of sports excellence in Nigeria. Oshodi expressed satisfaction that the Trust Fund has remained faithful to that mandate.
The LSSTF Chairman highlighted some of the achievements of the Trust Fund over the last cycle, including the reconstruction of the Olympic-size swimming pool, warm-up pool, and 250-seater spectators' stand. Other achievements include the complete renovation of five outdoor courts, full renovation of the Indoor Sports Hall (Mobolaji Johnson Indoor Sports Hall), and the rehabilitation of the dilapidated squash courts hall.
The LSSTF has also procured and distributed sports equipment to 1,020 public primary schools through the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB). Additionally, the Trust Fund has distributed sports equipment to 644 public secondary schools through the six Education Districts in Lagos State and five tertiary institutions in Lagos State.
The Trust Fund has also focused on continuous training and retraining of state athletes and coaches to improve podium performance. They have sponsored and supported various disability games and other major sports competitions across Lagos State. Oshodi noted that the distribution of sports equipment to the 57 LGs and LCDAs is the next phase of the grassroots revolution.
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, emphasized that sports is not a luxury but a necessity. He stated that it is a critical pillar of the THEMES+ Agenda, especially Youth Engagement, Social Inclusion, and Health.
The governor's administration believes that the distribution of sports equipment is not just about providing materials but about three key aspects: security and youth engagement, talent discovery, health, and education. The governor wants children to be healthy, learn teamwork, discipline, and leadership.
