The Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF) has donated protective equipment to the Maritime Police Command in a move to strengthen security across Lagos waterways. The intervention includes 30 ballistic helmets, 30 bulletproof vests, 30 pairs of operational boots, and 30 raincoats. This initiative was announced during the maiden official visit of LSSTF's Executive Secretary, Dr. Ayodele Ogunsan, to Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Maritime Police Command, AIG Ronke Nurat Okunade.
The support provided by LSSTF underscores the security significance of Lagos' lagoons, creeks, coastal corridors, terminals, and ports, which are central to the movement of people and goods. Securing the waterways is crucial for the state's economic and public safety architecture. Dr. Ogunsan stated that the donation aims to strengthen the Maritime Police's work in securing Lagos waterways, acknowledging their excellent job in keeping the waterways safe.
The responsibilities of the Maritime Police extend beyond routine policing to securing Nigeria's maritime domain, combating maritime crime, and protecting economic interests. Dr. Ogunsan emphasized that sustained support from stakeholders is necessary, particularly as the country approaches another electoral cycle and the ember months. He noted that the waterways must remain secure during this period due to increased security demands.
The LSSTF has previously supported the Lagos Marine Police with fuel for gunboats and repairs of marine assets. Dr. Ogunsan promised to provide a brand-new pickup vehicle for patrol within a month. He added that plans are underway for further interventions, including procuring brand-new gunboats for the Maritime Police.
AIG Ronke Nurat Okunade welcomed Dr. Ogunsan's visit, describing it as an opportunity to deepen collaboration between institutions with shared responsibilities for public safety. She acknowledged the role of LSSTF in strengthening security operations in Lagos and appreciated the donation, assuring that the equipment would be deployed professionally and accountably.
The strategic importance of Lagos waterways, ports, terminals, jetties, and coastal communities extends to commerce, transportation, investment, national revenue, and critical infrastructure. AIG Okunade stressed the importance of local knowledge in effective maritime policing, noting that familiarity with the environment gives officers an advantage in carrying out their duties.
The command remains operationally prepared for the ember months and the forthcoming electoral period. AIG Okunade assured that the coastal environment is safe during the ember months and that the donated equipment will be used professionally. The LSSTF's intervention is consistent with its mandate to bridge operational and logistical gaps confronting security agencies, established by Lagos State law in September 2007.
