Beneficiaries of the Social Cash Transfer Programme in Traditional Authority Khongoni, Lilongwe District, have expressed gratitude for the initiative, citing its positive impact on their livelihoods. The programme, implemented by the Malawi Government with World Bank support, targets ultra-poor and labour-constrained households. One beneficiary, Lutiya Dawe, a mother of three, shared her experience of struggling to provide for her family after her husband allegedly abandoned her.

Dawe's circumstances improved after enrolling in the Social Cash Transfer Programme, which provided her with regular financial support. She invested part of the money in activities aimed at improving her family's livelihood, rather than using it for immediate household consumption. Through village savings and loans groups under the Community Savings and Investment Promotion Cooperative Limited initiative, Dawe saved some of the money. This approach allowed her to make the most of the financial assistance.

Lilongwe District Council principal social welfare officer Sarah Chimodzi noted that Dawe's experience demonstrates the effectiveness of social protection interventions when combined with prudent financial management and livelihood investments. Chimodzi expressed excitement about the programme's impact, citing examples of beneficiaries acquiring livestock and building resilient houses. The programme has also reduced risks such as withdrawal of children from school due to poverty.

The Social Cash Transfer Programme has made a significant difference in the lives of beneficiaries, enabling them to build assets, diversify their sources of income, and work towards self-reliance. Chimodzi highlighted the programme's role in supporting vulnerable households, allowing them to improve their living standards. By investing in their futures, beneficiaries are better equipped to overcome poverty.
