The Libyan National Meteorological Center has issued a weather alert, warning of heavy rain and potential flash flooding in various regions across the country, effective October 28, 2026. The center forecasts scattered rain showers in northern Libya, particularly in the northeastern regions, with a renewed chance of thunderstorms in the northwestern areas starting Friday. Residents are advised to exercise caution due to the potential for sudden weather changes.
The regions expected to be affected include the area from Tripoli to Sirte, the Jifara plain, and the Nefusa Mountains. Although the effectiveness of the rain-bearing clouds is expected to decrease by late evening, there is still a risk of scattered showers. On Friday, some areas in the western mountain and southern regions, as well as internal areas, are expected to experience renewed rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorm cells that may extend to coastal areas later.
In the eastern regions, including the Gulf and the Benghazi plain up to Ajdabiya, residents can expect moderate to heavy rain showers, particularly in areas stretching from the east of Marj to the Green Mountain and Derna, reaching the far eastern coast. This may lead to water accumulation in low-lying areas and potential flash flooding in local valleys. The National Meteorological Center advises residents to take necessary precautions.
The expected wind patterns in these regions will be northwest to northeast, with variable directions and light to moderate speeds. Daytime temperatures are forecasted to range between 21-26°C. Meanwhile, in the Gulf and Benghazi plain, winds will be west to northwest, with moderate to strong speeds, and temperatures will range between 19-25°C.
In the southern regions, including Jufra, Sebha, Ghat, Ghadames, and Hamada, the skies will be mostly clear with scattered clouds, particularly in the Jufra area and its surroundings. Wind directions will be variable, shifting to southeast and southwest with strong speeds by the next day. Temperatures in these areas will range between 27-32°C, with a gradual increase expected over the next two days.
The regions of Wauat, Sarir, Tazirbu, and Kufra will experience mostly clear skies with scattered clouds, particularly in the Wauat area. Wind directions will be variable, with light to moderate speeds, and temperatures will range between 25-29°C.
Looking ahead, the National Meteorological Center expects a renewed chance of thunderstorms starting Friday in the northwestern regions, particularly in the western mountain and southern areas, with a potential extension to some coastal areas later. Residents are advised to stay informed about weather updates and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
