The Movement for Democratic Alliance (MODA) in Liberia has issued a statement clarifying that Minister of Agriculture, Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah, is not a member of the organization. This comes after recent public discussions and media reports suggested a link between the Minister and MODA, citing his support for a youth training initiative in Bong County. MODA Acting Chairman Lawrence N. Yallah signed the statement, emphasizing the need to correct misunderstandings surrounding the matter.
MODA described itself as a "political movement" and not a "political party," founded on principles of democratic participation, integrity, unity, equity, inclusion, public service, and sustainable development. The organization stressed that it remains open to working with individuals and institutions that serve the legitimate interests of the Liberian people. However, it cautioned that cooperation on specific development projects should not be interpreted as political membership or affiliation.
The controversy originated from July 14, 2026, when Minister Nuetah made five excavator-training slots available for young people from Bong County. This followed an appeal from MODA's Commander-in-Chief, Mr. Jomah B. Dolo, for more opportunities for the county's youth. The slots drew 252 applicants who went through an independent vetting and selection process. MODA facilitated the exercise to ensure a transparent and competitive process.
MODA emphasized that Minister Nuetah did not personally select the five beneficiaries and did not set up any political recruitment process through the Movement. The organization was "even more excited" that all five selected individuals turned out to be supporters of the Unity Party, although party affiliation was not a requirement for applying. The five young people are expected to begin their excavator training at For Life Zoe.
The organization dismissed suggestions that Minister Nuetah's support for the training slots through MODA indicates an effort to form a political party to challenge President Joseph Nyuma Boakai's potential bid for a second term. MODA described such claims as "blatant mendacity" from "back-door politicians" afraid of youth progression. The Movement called on individuals to distinguish between development initiatives and political affiliation.
MODA further stated that Minister Nuetah's political affiliation and future decisions are matters that should be addressed through his own public statements and actions, not attributed to the Movement. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to its stated principles and engaging with anyone prepared to support initiatives that advance the interests of the Liberian people.
