The Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) has formally renewed Jungle Energy Power's (JEP) Large-Scale Distribution license, effective September 23. This renewal follows a comprehensive review and public consultation process that began in 2021. LERC Managing Director, Augustus V. Goanue, emphasized that the commission adhered to statutory procedures, conducting a full documentary and public review rather than treating the renewal as a routine administrative extension.
The renewal process included a public hearing held at the Liberia International Christian Community College on September 9. Goanue highlighted that the commission's law requires license renewals to undergo the same process as initial license issuances. The hearing was attended by city officials, LERC staff, Mayor's Office representatives, and visiting officials. Follow-up meetings with civil servants and community representatives helped address concerns raised during the hearing.
LERC's Technical, Legal, and Economic Teams will continue to monitor JEP's compliance with the license terms and conditions. Acting LERC Board Chairman Amara M. Kamara stressed that renewals must meet the same standards as initial licenses. The commission reviewed JEP's asset base and operating conditions before issuing the certificate. Kamara described the public hearing as "interactive and participatory" and pledged continued oversight.
Deputy Minister for Energy Charles Umehai, speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, urged JEP's leadership to accept constructive criticisms and strengthen partnerships with civil society to improve service delivery. He praised LERC's oversight for encouraging private-sector participation and commended JEP for expanding energy assets in and around Nimba County. Umehai emphasized that access to electricity is crucial for economic growth, education, and healthcare services.
Eric A.B. Fredericks, Deputy Managing Director for Administration at LEC, congratulated JEP on the renewal, describing the process as following "best international practices" that build investor confidence. He urged JEP to welcome feedback from regulators and peers, calling LEC a partner in efforts to improve nationwide service delivery. JEP General Manager Aleyou Keita accepted the renewed license on behalf of the company.
LERC officials stressed that the renewal carries both rights and responsibilities, urging JEP to provide "reliable, safe, affordable, and quality" electricity across Nimba County. The regulator will continue engaging consumers and providers to address service concerns and ensure a predictable, consumer-protective regulatory framework that attracts credible investment.
