LG Electronics has reiterated its dedication to providing innovative Smart TV experiences that combine convenience, personalization, security, and customer control in Nigeria. This move is in response to the growing adoption of smart home technology and connected entertainment among Nigerian consumers. Modern Smart TVs have evolved beyond traditional television viewing, offering features such as voice-enabled searches and personalized content recommendations.
According to Mr. Choongbae Seok, General Manager, Media Entertainment Solutions, LE Electronics, customer empowerment is at the heart of LG’s Smart TV experience. He stated that features like voice recognition, Automatic Content Recognition (ACR), and personalized recommendations are optional and require users to actively opt-in before activation. This allows customers to choose which features to use, review permissions, adjust settings, or withdraw consent at any time.
LG emphasizes that its innovations are built with a clear focus on transparency, user choice, and privacy protection. The company’s voice recognition system is designed for convenience, not surveillance. Voice control is disabled by default and only becomes active when users choose to enable the feature. The system responds only when a user deliberately initiates a voice command, either by pressing the microphone button on the remote or enabling hands-free voice control on compatible models.
LG Smart TVs do not continuously record conversations or store ambient household discussions. When hands-free voice control is enabled, the television only listens locally for a specific wake word. Audio that does not contain the wake word is processed on the device and immediately discarded without being stored or transmitted. Once a voice command is completed, the voice recognition session automatically ends, ensuring that only intentional interactions are processed.
LG’s Smart TVs offer an optional feature called Automatic Content Recognition (ACR), which identifies what content is being viewed from supported sources. This feature helps improve content discovery, audience insights, and viewing experiences while remaining fully under customer control. ACR is turned off by default and requires users to accept separate agreements before activation. The feature uses audio fingerprinting technology to recognize content without storing visual or audio media from users’ televisions.
LG stressed that its Smart TVs are designed to simplify connectivity with other devices. Device discovery technology enables Smart TVs to recognize and communicate with compatible devices such as set-top boxes, gaming consoles, and IoT-enabled products. This function allows users to enjoy a more seamless and integrated entertainment ecosystem. Information gathered to support device connectivity is used solely to facilitate those connections and is not used for household profiling or targeted advertising without additional user consent.
The company also prioritizes security, operating a global Bug Bounty Programme and collaborating with independent security researchers to identify and address potential vulnerabilities. Eligible TV models currently receive security updates for up to five years from the initial release of the applicable webOS platform version. By combining innovation with strong security protections, transparent privacy practices, and user-controlled settings, LG aims to help Nigerian families get the best from their Smart TV experience.
