Renowned lawyer Danstan Omari has called on former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i to abandon his presidential ambitions and instead support President William Ruto as he seeks a second term in the 2027 General Election. Omari made these remarks during an interview with journalists at a hotel in Kisii. He emphasized that Matiang'i lacks the necessary political backing from influential politicians and opposition figures, which could lead to his isolation as political alliances take shape.
According to Omari, neither Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua nor the emerging Linda Mwananchi political movement led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has Matiang'i at the center of their political calculations. Omari claimed that Gachagua has not forgiven Matiang'i over the deployment of police officers to his residence during Matiang'i's tenure in government. This development could further weaken Matiang'i's support base.
Omari also pointed out that more leaders associated with Matiang'i are likely to abandon his camp and gravitate towards Ruto. He cited Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka's recent political realignment as evidence of growing uncertainty within Matiang'i's support network. Onyonka, a vocal supporter of Matiang'i, has shifted to the Linda Mwananchi faction and was appointed as the movement's treasurer.
Although Onyonka has maintained that his participation in Linda Mwananchi does not necessarily mean abandoning Matiang'i, his formal involvement in the new outfit has raised questions about cohesion in Matiang'i's camp. Omari believes that the Gusii community's interests would be better served through participation in government rather than remaining in opposition.
Omari stated that the Omogusii community's interest is not to be in opposition but to be in government, citing the influence of big tribes in Kenya's politics. He argued that being in government would provide a stronger voice for the community in national leadership. Matiang'i has attracted considerable attention, particularly in Kisii and Nyamira counties, where sections of the Abagusii community have rallied behind his candidature.
Matiang'i's supporters have sought to build a movement around his experience in government, administrative record, and perceived ability to manage public institutions. However, Omari's call to back Ruto may sway some of Matiang'i's supporters. The 2027 General Election is expected to be highly competitive, with various politicians vying for top positions.
The dynamics of the election are becoming clearer, with alliances and realignments taking shape. As the election approaches, politicians are likely to make strategic decisions to strengthen their support base. Matiang'i's decision to heed Omari's call or forge ahead with his presidential ambitions remains to be seen.
