The Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, has withdrawn the operating licences of six Private Sector Participation, PSP, operators due to their inability to provide effective waste collection services in their assigned areas. This decision was made to strengthen the PSP waste collection system and ensure that operators responsible for serving communities have the capacity to meet the waste management needs of residents.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed this during a management briefing at the Authority’s headquarters in Ijora-Olopa. He stated that the Authority's responsibility is to ensure that every operator serving Lagos residents has the capacity to deliver reliable and efficient waste collection services.
The affected operators are K-HS Integrated Services, Deshasat Enterprises, Bailas Nigeria Company, Guestimate Environmental Protection Company, Evabol Ventures, and Korad Closet Empire Limited. These operators serve various areas including Igbogbo-Baiyeku, Olorunda, Ojo, Orile Agege, Ajeromi-Ifelodun, and Ojodu. The specific service locations affected have been identified and alternative arrangements will be made to ensure continuity of services.
According to Gbadegesin, the action was taken following concerns over the operators’ capacity to deliver their assigned services. K-HS Integrated Services voluntarily withdrew from its service area, while the operating licences of the remaining five operators were terminated by the Authority. This move is part of LAWMA’s efforts to reform the PSP waste collection system.
LAWMA aims to enforce stronger performance standards, expand service coverage, improve accountability, and strengthen regulatory oversight. Gbadegesin assured residents in the affected communities that arrangements would be made to ensure that waste collection services continue without disruption. Residents are urged to continue disposing of their waste through approved waste management channels.
The withdrawal of licences is a regulatory action taken to protect service delivery and the interests of residents. LAWMA seeks to ensure that waste management operators have the necessary capacity to meet the needs of the community. This decision reflects the Authority's commitment to maintaining effective waste management services in Lagos.
Gbadegesin emphasized that the move is aimed at improving waste management services in Lagos. The Authority will continue to monitor and regulate waste management operators to ensure compliance with performance standards. Residents can expect continued waste collection services in the affected areas with minimal disruption.
