The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has taken steps to prevent a resurgence of illegal dumping in the Eric Moore Road axis of Surulere. Enforcement operatives were deployed to the area over the weekend to secure grounds already covered and deter further unauthorized waste disposal. This move aims to ensure the road and its surroundings remain free of environmental nuisance.
This latest operation follows a similar exercise along Ago Palace Way, where the authority sealed several premises due to persistent illegal dumping. Eleven individuals were also arrested in separate enforcement operations across Lagos Island for unauthorized waste handling and disposal. These efforts reflect LAWMA's determination to enforce waste management regulations and promote compliance with approved disposal practices.
According to LAWMA's Managing Director, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the authority's goal is not only to apprehend offenders but also to change public attitudes towards waste disposal. He emphasized that residents, traders, businesses, and property owners must properly bag and dispose of waste through accredited Private Sector Participation operators. Gbadegesin warned that LAWMA would continue to monitor Lagos and take enforcement action against violators.
The authority has urged residents to support its efforts by using approved waste disposal channels and reporting illegal dumping and other waste management violations. LAWMA's operations are aimed at securing areas already cleared of illegal dumping and preventing previously addressed black spots from re-emerging. The public is encouraged to dispose of waste through approved channels and avoid dumping on roads and other unauthorized locations.
