Latvia assumes the presidency of the UN Security Council for the first time in its history, marking a significant milestone for the Baltic nation. As it takes over for the month of November, Latvia has outlined key priorities, including the situation in Ukraine and emerging security challenges such as artificial intelligence and new technologies. This development comes as the international community continues to navigate complex global security issues.

According to Latvian Ambassador to the UN, Saniţa Pavļuta-Deslandes, the country aims to utilize its presidency to promote its priorities within the Security Council. With around 90% of the council's agenda consisting of regular and mandatory meetings, the presidency allows for the organization of one or two high-level events on issues of particular importance. Latvia has emphasized the protection of international law and the UN Charter, support for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, and the promotion of women's participation.

The Latvian presidency will also focus on addressing new security challenges, including climate change and the impact of emerging technologies on international peace and security. A key event scheduled during Latvia's presidency is the first meeting of the Informal Expert Group on Technology, Peace, and Security, established on October 23 at the initiative of Latvia and Greece. This group aims to study the implications of new technologies on international peace and security.

On the Middle East agenda, the Security Council is expected to vote on the extension of sanctions related to Yemen during Latvia's presidency. This comes as the international community continues to monitor developments in the region. Additionally, the process of selecting the next UN Secretary-General is ongoing, with Latvia playing a crucial role in this process as a member of the Security Council.

Latvia has called for a more open and transparent selection process for the next UN Secretary-General, involving interactive dialogues with all candidates in the General Assembly and informal discussions with Security Council members. This development is particularly significant given the ongoing competition among several candidates, including the UAE's Lana Zakia Nuseibeh, who recently joined the race.

In addition to these priorities, Latvia will also preside over the election of judges to the International Court of Justice on November 3, within the Security Council and the General Assembly. This marks one of the major institutional responsibilities scheduled for the beginning of the month. Latvia's presidency follows a series of consecutive European presidencies, including Denmark, France, and Greece.

Latvia's non-permanent membership in the Security Council continues until the end of 2027. As the country assumes this critical role, it is expected to navigate complex global security challenges, including the situation in Ukraine and the impact of emerging technologies on international peace and security.
