The Lagos State government is investing in mass transit infrastructure, with the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) announcing plans to open three new stations on the Blue Rail Line by February 2027. The new stations are part of a phased expansion strategy to extend the line from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko. This move aims to ease congestion and improve urban mobility for millions of commuters in Lagos.

The Managing Director of LAMATA, Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, made the announcement during the annual media parley organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation. She highlighted that the Blue Rail Line currently operates approximately 92 services daily, with plans to replicate this operational model on the Red Line. The expansion strategy is part of Lagos State's long-term plan to build a comprehensive rail network.

On the Red Rail Line, LAMATA will receive three new eight-car train sets in November, significantly increasing operational capacity. The line currently operates nine passenger services daily, which will rise to about 20 daily services immediately after deployment and approximately 28 daily services by the end of 2027. This expansion will enhance the state's public transport system and provide more reliable mobility options.

LAMATA is also making progress on the construction of major Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridors, terminals, and depots, with several critical infrastructure projects expected to be completed by February 2027. These projects aim to strengthen multimodal integration by providing seamless connections between rail, bus, and other public transport services across Lagos.

The Lagos State government is committed to environmentally sustainable mobility, with future public bus procurement focusing exclusively on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric-powered buses. This aligns with Nigeria's commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Additional CNG-powered buses are expected to arrive within the next five to six months.

The latest rail expansion is part of Lagos State's broader transport transformation programme aimed at reducing travel time, increasing passenger capacity, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and providing safer mobility options. The programme targets the state's rapidly growing population of more than 25 million residents.

The expansion of the Blue and Red Rail Lines, along with the introduction of new BRT corridors and environmentally friendly buses, demonstrates Lagos State's commitment to developing a unified, modern, and regulated public transport system. This will enhance the quality of life for residents and contribute to the state's economic growth.
