The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has reported a total of 1,324 emergency incidents between January and September. Fire calls accounted for 1,135 of these cases, according to the agency's third-quarter activity report. The report highlights various emergencies handled during this period, including rescue calls, salvage operations, collapsed-building incidents, and a gas-related explosion.
The report, shared by spokesperson Maria Fadairo on Facebook, provides a detailed breakdown of the emergencies. There were 79 rescue calls, 100 salvage operations, nine collapsed-building incidents, and one gas-related explosion. A total of 210 people were rescued, while 65 suspected corpses were recovered from emergency scenes. Additionally, the service recorded 341 false emergency calls, which can delay response times to genuine emergencies.
The Controller-General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, emphasized the importance of sustained consciousness and prompt reporting of emergencies. She stressed that strict compliance with fire-safety regulations across the state is crucial, especially as the dry season approaches. Adeseye noted that the statistics underscore the need for residents to take greater care and exercise caution when storing or handling flammable materials.
The service estimated that property worth N79.44 billion was saved during the period, while losses were put at N13.24 billion. The total value of property affected was estimated at N92.68 billion. January recorded the highest number of emergency incidents, with 203 cases, followed by March with 201. September had the lowest number of incidents, with 94 cases.
March recorded the highest number of fire calls, with 176, while January had 173. September had the lowest number of fire calls, with 80. Adeseye advised residents to avoid indiscriminate burning and exercise caution when storing or handling flammable materials. She also urged residents to switch off electrical appliances when not in use and ensure fire extinguishers are functional.
Property owners were advised to keep escape routes and access points clear to allow firefighters to reach buildings during emergencies. Adeseye urged residents to report fires promptly and cooperate with emergency responders at incident scenes. The Lagos government has taken steps to strengthen its emergency response capacity, including the approval of 150 additional firefighters in January.
