Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has pledged to support the 11th General Assembly of the Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN), scheduled to hold on November 15 at the University of Ibadan Central Mosque Hall, Oyo State. The governor hosted the leadership of the South-West Muslim community at Lagos House, Marina, where discussions centered on Muslim participation in governance, religious harmony, and institutional development.
The meeting was part of MUSWEN's ongoing consultations with state governments and stakeholders across the South-West to mobilize support for the General Assembly. MUSWEN President, Alhaji Rasaki Oladejo, led the delegation to the meeting. Sanwo-Olu assured the Muslim leaders that Lagos State would be represented by a high-powered delegation at the assembly.
Sanwo-Olu also pledged support for MUSWEN's proposed endowment fund, designed to provide sustainable financial backing for its programs and long-term institutional development. The governor commended MUSWEN for its contributions to interfaith engagement, religious tolerance, and peaceful coexistence in the South-West. He acknowledged the role of religious leaders in nation-building and their partnership with the government.
Beyond the assembly, Sanwo-Olu solicited MUSWEN's support for President Bola Tinubu's second-term ambition and other APC candidates in the 2027 general elections. The governor also addressed the request for the reactivation of the Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Inter-Religious Council (NIREC), explaining that the joint Muslim-Christian platform is already functioning in the state with his administration's active support.
The MUSWEN delegation also visited the Chairman of the Lagos State Governor's Advisory Council, Prince Tajudeen Olusi, who challenged Muslim scholars to deepen research into Islamic knowledge and promote a proper understanding and application of Islamic teachings. Olusi urged Muslims to demonstrate greater interest in politics and participate in Nigeria's democratic process.
Oladejo reaffirmed MUSWEN's commitment to peaceful coexistence, religious tolerance, and nation-building. He appealed for support and participation in the 11th General Assembly, which will bring together delegates from across the South-West, Islamic scholars, and community leaders to review MUSWEN's activities and chart a strategic direction for Muslims in the region.
The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, will attend the assembly as the Chief Guest of Honour. One of the major highlights is the planned transfer of leadership to Alhaji Rafiu Adisa Ebiti, the current Deputy President I.
