The Lagos State Government has called on Directors and Heads of Finance and Accounts across various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to work together to achieve better results in public financial management and service delivery. This call was made at a two-day retreat organised by the State Treasury Office for Finance and Accounts Officers across the state. The retreat had the theme, “Strengthening Public Finance in Lagos State – Compliance to Performance.”

Speaking at the retreat, the Lagos State Commissioner for Finance, Mr Abayomi Oluyomi, stated that the era of government officials working in isolation without synergy was over. He urged Finance and Accounts Officers to work together towards achieving measurable results for the state. Oluyomi noted that Lagos State was blessed with competent personnel whose collective expertise must be harnessed through teamwork to deliver quality services to residents.

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Treasury Office, Dr Adetola John, addressed participants and stressed that collaboration and teamwork were essential to improving the performance of government offices. He encouraged Finance and Accounts Officers to avoid being the weak link and ensure they moved their respective offices forward as a team. John emphasized that much was expected from these officers in their respective ministries, departments and agencies.

The Guest Speaker at the retreat, Dr Joshua Ademuwagun, urged participants to put aside personal differences and build a culture based on trust, commitment and accountability. He noted that the absence of teamwork could undermine an organisation’s ability to achieve its objectives. Ademuwagun stressed that every officer had a responsibility to contribute to the success of the team.

Ademuwagun further emphasized that collaboration must be the name of the game for Finance and Accounts Officers to achieve good results. He encouraged team members to help each other and leverage on their strengths. According to him, if officers want to achieve their mission and vision, they must collaborate; it’s not an option.

The retreat aimed at strengthening cooperation among Finance and Accounts Officers across Lagos State’s MDAs while reinforcing the need to move beyond basic compliance towards improved performance in public financial management. The Lagos State Government is committed to ensuring that its staff work together to deliver quality services to residents.

The Commissioner for Finance, Mr Abayomi Oluyomi, concluded that working individually was no longer recognised in Lagos State. He emphasized that motivation is not only about money but also about the work environment, which can be improved through collaboration.
