Damilola Sonayon-James, the All Progressives Congress Deputy Governorship Candidate in Lagos State, has called on Christian leaders and young people to take a more active role in politics. This appeal was made at a prayer and mobilisation programme organised by the Lagos Directorate of Christian Affairs of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors last week. The event aimed to mobilise support ahead of the 2027 general elections. Sonayon-James emphasized that political participation should not be left to politicians alone, as government decisions directly impact citizens' welfare.
The programme featured the inauguration of grassroots coordinators across Lagos State's 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas. These coordinators will play a crucial role in mobilising support for the APC. The event also included prayers for President Bola Tinubu and the APC governorship candidate in Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat. Sonayon-James described Hamzat as a leader of integrity with a community-oriented approach, assuring supporters that an APC administration in Lagos would work for the benefit of residents.
Sonayon-James urged Christian leaders to participate actively in the political process and encouraged parents to support young people who wish to engage in politics. She also appealed to young people to participate in efforts to address issues affecting them, citing the Federal Government's response to some concerns raised by youths. According to Sonayon-James, an APC administration in Lagos would prioritize the welfare of residents.
Tayo Akinmade Ayinde, Lagos State Coordinator of the organisation and Chief of Staff to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, urged the coordinators to understand the specific challenges of their communities and work towards bringing people together. Ayinde described the gathering as both a prayer and mobilisation exercise, urging the coordinators to take the Renewed Hope message to churches and communities across Lagos.
Sam Ogedengbe, Director of the Directorate of Christian Affairs, Renewed Hope Ambassadors, stated that the group has been engaging Christian communities across the state through prayer walks, church outreaches, and sensitisation programmes. The directorate is supporting Tinubu's 2027 re-election bid and Hamzat's governorship campaign, citing policies such as the CNG initiative, student loans, local government autonomy, and infrastructure development.
Ogedengbe appealed for vehicles to support the directorate's grassroots mobilisation activities, assuring that the organisation would continue engaging churches and communities ahead of the elections. The directorate's efforts aim to ensure that Christian communities are informed and involved in the political process.
