Nonkululeko Ximba, owner of Asante Saanen, a goat milk production company in Mnambithi, KwaZulu-Natal, never thought she would venture into farming. However, her life took a dramatic turn in 2015 when her son struggled to digest cow's milk, prompting her to explore alternative health solutions. This led her to discover the benefits of goat's milk, which eventually became the foundation of her business.
Ximba's entry into the world of goat milk production was facilitated by a doctor's recommendation to try goat's milk for her son's health issues. Intrigued by its benefits, she began studying and experimenting with goat's milk, eventually starting to produce and sell yoghurt made from it in 2018. This marked the beginning of Asante Saanen, a business she named after her son, Asante, which means "we are thankful" in Swahili, and Saanen, a breed of goat known for its high-quality milk.
Asante Saanen has grown significantly since its inception, with Ximba attributing its success to her determination to learn and adapt. She has participated in various competitions, including the South African Agricultural Awards, which provided her with the opportunity to visit France and learn from experts in the field. This experience greatly enhanced her knowledge of goat milk production and helped her improve her business.
Ximba's business has also benefited from her participation in the Food Lover's Market program, where she gained valuable insights into managing and growing her business. Additionally, she has won several competitions, including the Phezu Komkhono award, which enabled her to purchase a machine that can milk two goats simultaneously, increasing her production efficiency.
Today, Asante Saanen boasts 47 goats, a significant increase from the initial 10, and employs three staff members to help manage the business. Ximba's products, including goat's milk, yoghurt, and cheese, have gained popularity among customers seeking alternative dairy products. Her success has also inspired her to give back to the community by sharing her knowledge and expertise.
Ximba's future plans include expanding her business to establish a standalone facility that will collaborate with the Department of Agriculture to educate people about the benefits of goat milk production. She aims to share her expertise, particularly in her community, where awareness about this industry is limited. With her passion for health and entrepreneurship, Ximba is poised to make a lasting impact in the agricultural sector.
Asante Saanen's growth and success are a testament to Ximba's hard work and dedication. Her journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs, particularly women, who are looking to turn their passions into successful businesses. With a strong foundation in place, Ximba is confident that her business will continue to thrive and make a positive contribution to the local economy.
