As the 2027 general election draws near, Kwara State finds itself at a critical juncture. The state's residents are faced with a choice that will determine their future, with many seeking an end to the prevailing hunger, insecurity, and misgovernance. According to Otunola A. Awoniyi, writing in the Nigerian Tribune, this moment calls for more than mere political slogans; it demands a decisive move towards the total liberation of Kwarans.

The emergence of Engr. Sulaiman Bolakale Kawu as the consensus governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been hailed as a unifying moment for the party. Following extensive consultations led by Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, Kawu's candidacy is seen as a sign of the PDP's unity and determination to rescue Kwara State. Kawu's running mate, Rev. Cornelius Oluwasegun Fawenu, completes the ticket that many believe can steer the state back to its former glory.

Reflecting on the past, Kwara State experienced a golden era from 2003 to 2019 under the leadership of Sen. Saraki and his successor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed. During this 16-year period, the state witnessed unprecedented institutional transformation, with projects such as the Kwara State University, the International Aviation College, and the Harmony Advanced Diagnostic Centre. These initiatives not only transformed the state's infrastructure but also created jobs and opened up new economic opportunities.

Under Dr. Bukola Saraki's leadership, Kwara State also made significant strides in education, healthcare, and economic empowerment. The establishment of the Shonga Farms Holdings, which employed over 3,000 youths, and the attraction of the Shoprite Mall to Ilorin, are examples of the state's economic transformation. Additionally, Saraki introduced Nigeria's first conditional cash transfer and community health insurance scheme for the poor, which was later adopted by the Federal Government.

The era of Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed saw the sustenance and deepening of the prosperity initiated by Saraki. Kwara became a model for infrastructural renewal, with projects such as the completion of KWASU campuses, the construction of over 40 major roads, and the launch of the Light-Up Kwara project. The state's internal revenue service was also reformed, enabling the state to pay salaries without solely depending on federal allocations.

However, since 2019, Kwara State has been plagued by insecurity, hunger, and educational retrogression. The traditional institution has been particularly affected, with several monarchs being kidnapped or killed by bandits. Reports indicate that at least four traditional rulers have died in unfortunate circumstances, with many others surviving after paying huge ransoms. The insecurity has also spread to Kwara North, with the Emir of Yashikira's family being abducted.

As the 2027 election approaches, Kwarans are faced with a defining moment in their history. The choice before them is not just about political parties but about the future and dignity of the state. With the PDP presenting Engr. Sulaiman Bolakale Kawu as its candidate, many are hopeful that the party can reclaim its former glory and steer the state back to the path of prosperity and security.
