Former Kano State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has expressed concerns about Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia's governance style. In an interview on Untold Stories with Adesuwa, published on YouTube, Kwankwaso reacted to the recent disruption of Peter Obi's visit to Benue State. A mob had blocked Obi's convoy as he attempted to enter the state to sympathize with victims of insecurity.
The incident occurred when Obi, the NDC presidential candidate, traveled to Benue to commiserate with those affected by the 2025 Yelwata massacre. The Benue State Government denied prior knowledge of the visit and allegations that it sponsored the mob. Kwankwaso described the incident as "unfortunate and unnecessary," noting that some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were unhappy with the development.
Kwankwaso emphasized the importance of political experience and continuous learning in effective governance. He warned that governors often become unwilling to listen to advice after assuming office. According to Kwankwaso, this is a general problem among governors, who sometimes think they have defeated everybody and no longer need guidance.
Kwankwaso recalled Alia's emergence as governor, mentioning his acquaintance with former Benue Governor and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume. He noted that Akume brought Alia from the church, and he was not a politician prior to his appointment. Kwankwaso expressed surprise at Alia's rapid rise to the governorship.
Kwankwaso stressed that becoming a governor requires learning and tutorship. He argued that anyone who becomes governor must first learn the responsibilities of the office and avoid repeating the mistakes of predecessors. According to Kwankwaso, it is essential to lie low, learn, and build knowledge before becoming a successful governor.
Kwankwaso also criticized the effect of sudden access to public resources on some politicians. He noted that those who come from nowhere and straight to the government house often go with sirens and billions of naira, which can lead to poor political judgment. Kwankwaso linked the Benue incident to poor political judgment and a lack of experience.
