Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to respect the principle of popular sovereignty as it seeks to reorganise its structures. In a recorded message played at the NPP's 2026 National Delegates Conference in Kumasi, Mr Kufuor emphasised that the party's understanding of democracy must reflect the principle that sovereignty ultimately belongs to the people. He urged the party to show true respect to the idea that true sovereignty is for the people generally.

Mr Kufuor wished the delegates success in their deliberations and urged them to take his message seriously. He expressed his goodwill and wished the party and its members God's blessings. The former President's message was a call to the party to reflect on its values and commitment to democracy. The NPP is currently reorganising its structures ahead of the 2028 general elections.

In a separate recorded message, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo welcomed delegates to the conference and described it as an important stage in the party's reorganisation. He noted that the conference was particularly significant as the party elected new national officers who would work with its presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and parliamentary candidates towards the 2028 general elections.

Mr Akufo-Addo urged delegates to rise above sectional interests and elect leaders capable of uniting the party and rebuilding its fortunes at all levels. He expressed confidence that guided by the theme, 'One Party, One Purpose, United for Victory', the delegates would make the right choices. The party's reorganisation is seen as a crucial step towards its goal of regaining power in 2028.

Mr Akufo-Addo acknowledged that the task ahead would be demanding and require commitment from party members. He noted that it would take energy, time, determination, and loyalty from all members. However, he expressed confidence that the party could regain power in 2028, drawing parallels with its victories in 2000 and 2016.

An NPP government under Dr Bawumia would promote the rule of law and the welfare of Ghanaians, in line with the party's motto of "Development in Freedom". Mr Akufo-Addo concluded by wishing the delegates a successful conference and reaffirming his commitment to the party and the country. The conference is a critical step in the party's preparations for the 2028 elections.
